Artificial intelligence is revolutionizing numerous industries and the online poker is no exception. AI’s integration into online casinos is reshaping the landscape of Poker from enhancing player experiences to introducing sophisticated challenges. AI is transforming how poker is played, analysed and even regulated in casinos online. From unbeatable bots to real-time coaching tools, AI is changing the game at every level.
AI-powered tools are now capable of analyzing massive datasets to reveal patterns and strategies beyond human comprehension. Advanced bots can simulate thousands of hands in seconds, giving developers insights into optimal gameplay. For casual players, AI offers training simulations and personalized feedback that dramatically accelerate skill development. On the operator side, AI helps detect collusion, cheating and suspicious betting patterns with unmatched precision. As both a tool and a challenge, AI is quickly becoming the new ace up the sleeve in the evolving world of online poker.
While AI offers unprecedented tools for skill development and game security, it simultaneously threatens the human elements that have defined poker for generations. This dichotomy presents both opportunities and existential challenges for the game’s future. Let’s take a loot at some of those challenges:
AI-Powered Bots
One of the most significant impacts of AI in online poker is the development of advanced poker bots. These AI-driven programs can analyze vast datasets, predict outcomes and execute strategies with precision. Notably, in 2019, an AI system named Pluribus, developed by researchers from Facebook and Carnegie Mellon University, defeated top human professionals in six-player no-limit Texas Hold’em. Pluribus achieved superhuman performance in multiplayer poker, a recognized milestone in artificial intelligence and game theory.
In 2017, Libratus, an AI developed by Carnegie Mellon University, crushed four of the world’s best heads-up no-limit Texas Hold’em players over 120,000 hands. Libratus’ victory over top professionals was statistically significant and not simply a matter of luck, showcasing the AI’s ability to do strategic reasoning with imperfect information. These advancements in AI poker bots have implications beyond gaming, with potential applications in areas such as military strategy and cybersecurity.
Building upon this, in 2023, PokerGPT emerged as a large language model (LLM)-based bot offering real-time strategy advice to players, further bridging the gap between human and AI decision-making in poker. However, the increasing sophistication of AI tools has led to concerns about fairness and integrity in online poker. In 2024, the GTO+ AI solver was banned from two major poker sites for providing users with an unfair advantage.
These developments underscore the dual nature of AI’s impact on poker: while enhancing strategic understanding, it also necessitates stringent measures to ensure fair play and prevent unfair exploitation. As AI continues to evolve, major casinos online are investing in AI detection tools to combat botting and ensure fair play. The integration of AI in online poker presents both opportunities and challenges, reshaping the landscape of this beloved card game.
Personalization
By analyzing player behavior, AI algorithms can recommend tailored game selections, adjust difficulty levels and provide customized promotions. For instance at online casinos, AI systems can monitor a player’s preferences, such as a penchant for Egyptian-themed slot games and subsequently suggest similar games to enhance their gaming experience. In a game like poker, AI players can adjust the game’s difficulty level to match the player’s skill which ensures a balanced challenge. This adaptability makes players feel valued and understood and increases their loyalty to the platform – but playing against AI is very likely something humans don’t want to do if given alternative to play against other real players.
Moreover, AI-driven personalization extends to promotional offers. Casinos utilize AI to analyze player habits and preferences, enabling them to offer bonuses, free spins and rewards tailored to each player’s unique gaming patterns. These real-time adjustments keep promotions relevant and engaging, enhancing the overall player experience. The integration of AI in online casinos not only enhances player satisfaction but also promotes responsible gaming. By analyzing patterns, AI can identify potential signs of problem gambling and provide timely interventions, such as self-exclusion options or reminders to take breaks.
Fraud Detection and Fair Play
AI has become very important in maintaining fair play and detecting fraud in online poker. Leading platforms like PokerStars employ sophisticated AI systems to monitor gameplay and identify irregularities that may indicate cheating. These systems analyze vast amounts of data to detect patterns consistent with bot usage, such as uniform betting behaviors, consistent response times and prolonged play without breaks. When such patterns are identified, accounts are flagged for further investigation by specialized teams.
In addition to detecting bots, AI is instrumental in uncovering collusion among players. By examining hand histories and betting patterns, AI can identify instances where players may be working together to gain an unfair advantage. For example, in 2015, PokerStars investigated a group of accounts, primarily based in Russia, suspected of collusion in Pot Limit Omaha games. The investigation revealed that these accounts had won over $2.8 million through coordinated play, leading to significant losses for unsuspecting players.
To combat the use of unauthorized software, PokerStars has implemented measures to detect and prevent multi-accounting and the use of real-time assistance tools. Their systems monitor for the simultaneous use of prohibited programs and analyze player behavior to ensure compliance with fair play policies. These efforts are complemented by collaborations with other organizations to enhance detection capabilities and maintain the integrity of the game.
Similarly, 888poker has taken proactive steps to address the use of AI and real-time assistance tools. In 2022, the platform refunded nearly $290,000 to over 6,800 players who were affected by unfair play, demonstrating a commitment to protecting its user base. These actions underscore the industry’s dedication to leveraging AI not only to enhance the gaming experience but also to uphold the principles of fair competition and trust among players.
Real-Time Assistance: A Dangerous Threat When Undetected
Artificial intelligence has significantly influenced online poker, particularly through real-time player assistance tools. GGPoker’s Smart HUD is a prominent example, providing players with real-time statistics and insights on their own play and that of their opponents during games. This tool offers features such as tracking opponents’ tendencies, including fold-to-3bet statistics and leak detection to improve player strategy. By analyzing hand histories and player behaviors, Smart HUD helps players make informed decisions based on statistical evidence rather than just intuition.
However, the rise of RTA tools has also led to initiatives to ensure fair play with detection technology. In 2025, GGPoker partnered with GTO Wizard to enhance security measures against the misuse of real-time assistance (RTA) tools. This collaboration resulted in the banning of 31 accounts for violating fair play rules, highlighting the platform’s commitment to maintaining a level playing field.
The Future of AI in Poker
The integration of AI into the world of poker has sparked a significant ethical debate, with opinions divided on whether AI is enhancing or undermining the game. On the positive side, AI has made poker more accessible to beginners through coaching tools that analyze gameplay, identify mistakes and suggest improvements. For instance, AI-powered training apps assess probabilities and optimize betting patterns, allowing players to make informed choices and improve their strategies. Additionally, AI enhances game integrity by detecting cheating behaviors. Advanced machine learning algorithms analyze gameplay patterns to identify instances of AI-driven cheating, helping to maintain a fair playing environment.
AI-driven platforms also offer personalized gaming experiences. By analyzing player behavior, these systems can recommend tailored game selections, adjust difficulty levels, and provide customized promotions, thereby increasing player engagement and satisfaction.
Conversely, there are concerns that AI may threaten the essence of poker. Bots capable of mimicking human imperfections can deceive players and compromise fair play. The widespread use of solver tools that calculate optimal strategies has led to a more formulaic approach to the game, potentially stifling creativity and reducing reliance on intuition and psychological insight. Furthermore, the rapid advancement of AI technologies poses challenges for regulators, who struggle to keep up with the pace of innovation. Establishing clear guidelines and enforcing compliance are critical to ensuring that AI’s use in poker remains ethical and within legal boundaries.
Despite these concerns, the momentum behind AI innovation in poker shows no signs of slowing down. Several emerging technologies are poised to redefine the gaming experience in 2025 and beyond. One significant development is the integration of AI in hosting poker tables that adjust difficulty levels in real-time. Advanced AI systems can analyze player behavior and skill levels, modifying game dynamics to ensure that both novice and experienced players find the game engaging and fair.
Virtual Reality is also making strides in the poker world. Poker platforms on Meta Quest offer immersive environments where players can interact using expressive avatars. These avatars are designed to convey subtle cues, allowing players to read opponents “tells” in a virtual setting, closely mimicking the nuances of live poker games. Such innovations bridge the gap between online and in-person poker experiences.
Blockchain technology is enhancing transparency and fairness in online poker. Poker sites are utilizing cryptographic algorithms to ensure each hand is provably fair, allowing players to verify the randomness and integrity of game outcomes. This decentralized approach not only builds trust among players but also streamlines transactions, offering faster and more secure gaming experiences.
As AI continues to evolve, its role in poker is expected to expand further. From real-time strategy adjustments to immersive VR interactions and transparent blockchain-based gaming, AI is set to revolutionize the way poker is played around the world.
